New School Curriculum and The Environment………….
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education through their Minister, Honourable Douglas Dokora made Agroforestry a part of the new curriculum. This was done with the aim of equipping students from a young age with the necessary skills needed for technical work and to diversify the economy from mostly crop production to forest resources production.
Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust being dedicated to the environment largely through afforestation and reforestation has taken their work to secondary schools as a way to support the government’s cause and groom Green Ambassadors. Currently running a “Catch-Them-Young” campaign, Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust grooms young students to safeguard the environment and also educate communities on the importance of preserving trees and the dangers of deforestation.
Planting two hundred and fifty trees at Parirewa High School in Domboshava, the organization showed the possibility of a green environment. Head of Department for Agriculture, Mrs. Nechironga, staff members and students showed much enthusiasm during the planting of trees and thanked Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust for awarding their students and staff an opportunity for exercising the real practical work.
A famous saying that remains very true points out that, “knowledge is power.” Much gratitude was given on the knowledge imparted into Parirerwa High staff and students and the Domboshava community on the possibility of earning a livelihood from forest resources.
Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe Trust showcased earrings made from tree products, honey, mushrooms and mophane worms (madora) giving clear cut exhibits of how different people can benefit from the preservation of trees. Impressed by what they had seen, driven by a need to emulate that which can be applauded, and guided by a goal to put into practice what they had learnt, Parirerwa High School staff members voiced the need to have an environmental club and workshops that help teach students jewellery making techniques from tree seeds and pods, gathering fruits, bee keeping for honey, madora and mushrooms as a livelihood.
