I grew up in the Zmunya area, a peri urban area just outside Mutare city. Back then, when we were young it was a village , but later city activities started encroaching into the village. I witnessed trees and forests being destroyed for brickmaking and for energy for the city market.
In addition Zimunya areas has remained the city’s biggest source of fruits such as mangoes, lemons, tsubvu, morula and is a large income earner for the community. With continued deforestation to meet the city’s tree needs the Zimunya community’s livelihoods and food security are being threatened.
It is against this background that I grew interest in restoration efforts. I look forward to being part of this exciting team which seeks to restore forests lost to deforestation.
