Gifts that Grow: Rumbidzai Amoda @ 28

 In blog, Featured

It’s party time

Looking for something a little bit different for your Birthday? Look no further, Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe has your back.

EBZ gives you a selection of Gifts that Grow (trees) to choose from. Each year EBZ help people plant hundreds of trees when they want to celebrate milestones in their lives.

This September we were honoured to be part of Rumbi’s Green Birthday. EBZ helped  Rumbi plant 28 Trees at Domboshava Children’s Home to celebrate her 28th Birthday.

Rumbidzai Fortunate Amoda is a holder of a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Chemistry. She studied at Fort Hare University. Her work keeps her in contact with the natural environment. In her Biochemistry work life, there is so much focus on life and the chemical processes that take place in living organisms. These include trees producing oxygen that organisms take in to survive, small animals and insects that live in soil and help improve soil fertility and the important role of evapo-transpiration influence rainfall patterns. Rumbi realised that her job and her colleagues’ jobs are centred around nature and trees, hence she saw the need to plant trees on her birthday. Her vision is to see a greener environment where all living organisms thrive and survive for centuries to come.

Rumbie has always been sensitive to the needs of others especially the orphans and vulnerable children. From a very young age Rumbie never missed an opportunity to help another child in need either by sharing with them, her lunch box at school or sharing her books, pens or pencils. As Rumbie grew older she realised that all she wanted in life was to help other people and put a smile on someone’s face rather than expecting much from people.

It is against this background that Rumbie decided to put resources together with her family and friends and celebrate her 28th birthday with children from Domboshava Children’s Home on the 7th of September 2019. Instead of receiving birthday gifts herself, Rumbi will be giving the children gifts.

But the greatest gift Rumbi gave them was the Gift of Planting 28 Trees at Domboshava Children’s Home. Rumbi wants to be remembered every time a child sits under the shade of the tree or harvest a fruit from the trees that were planted on the 7th of September.

Rumbie believes that in addition to all the gifts she gave, a tree, A Gift That Will Grow, will go a long way in improving the lives of the children at the same time saving the planet from climate change and global warming. By choosing to give a tree as a gift, hoped the children will learn the need to protect, repair and preserve the Natural Environment for their benefit and for the benefit of future generation.

She is also a passionate traveller especially to nature parks. She realised that she must plant trees if she is to continue enjoying her nature walks and Game Drives.

The children were very excited about taking part in the tree planting process and really appreciate the gesture and promised to take care of the trees.

Present at the event were:

Domboshava Children’s Home Board Members and Management
Rumbi’s family members
The Mverechena Community
Traditional Leaders
EBZ Board Members
