A FEMALE SABHUKU (VILLAGE-HEAD) WITH A DIFFERENCE.
African cultural political structures are a clear definition of patriarchy. Men usually hold positions of influence, assuming all political tittles of headmen, chieftaincy and kingship. Victoria Falls’ Sisonke community however has a different story to tell. Headed by a woman, the community has demystified patriarchal cultural strongholds by having a female headwoman (Sabhuku).
What seemed to a taboo a long time back in time, has seemed to yield commendable results.
As a woman who is well acquainted with the nurturing instincts of a mother, the struggle of fending for a family, Village Head Margret Mzamba understands the importance of nurturing forests to do away with long journeys in search for firewood and the satiation each fruit holds during years of drought. Village-Head Margret Mzamba has taken a leading role as a woman in leadership to foster environmental change in her community.
Partnering with the guardians of the environment, Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe, the Sisonke Community will never be the same again. Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe educated the Community on the importance of trees and forestry and sustainable use of nature, where one has to grow at least ten trees for every tree cut.Environmental Buddies Zimbabwe helped to plant several indigenous trees.
With a leader determined to serve, forests were saved, and conserved for the future.
